CHAPTER PROGRAMS

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is dedicated to the ideals of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Public Service. In accordance with these ideals, Delta has established a long and glorious history of educational, cultural, political, and social service in the public's interest. To further its public service goals, Delta Sigma Theta operates under a Five Point Programmatic Thrust:

 

  1. Educational Development – Promotes academic excellence of children including early childhood literacy, before and after school programs, and scholarships for college education
     

  2. Economic Development – Promotes financial literacy, homeownership, and entrepreneurship
     

  3. Political Awareness and Involvement – Advocates improving the quality of life through active participation in the community and public service including voting, voter education, and participation in public policy initiatives
     

  4. Physical and Mental Health – Promotes community and individual wellness through focused prevention including fitness, healthy eating, and access to affordable healthcare
     

  5. International Awareness and Involvement - Promotes awareness of international history, issues, people, and cultural experiences

 

The current initiatives for the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter include the following.

  • Arts and Letters Committee – hosted a children's book drive for students in Bertie County Schools during the 2016-17 sorority year; during the 2017-18 sorority year, hosted a children's book drive for students in Hertford County Schools; during the 2018-2019 sorority year, Dr. Seuss Books were read on Dr. Seuss Day at a local Daycare Center

              

  • Social Action Committee – partnered with the “Divine Nine Greek Organizations” with a Voting Strategic Plan to approach the 2016 General Election; served as poll monitors at Murfreesboro Precinct I on Election Day, November 8, 2016; served as Canvass Monitors observing the count of provisional ballots on November 17, 2016; during the 2018-2019 sorority year, the Chapter  participated in a Voter Engagement Plan presented by the Democracy NC which provided:  Educational Awareness and Political Awareness and Involvement to the citizens of Bertie and Hertford Counties; chapter members served as poll workers and poll monitors for the 2018 General Election

  • Physical and Mental Health Committee – hosted Breast Cancer Awareness activities in October 2016 and Heart Awareness activities in February 2017 (The goal is to educate citizens in the Roanoke Chowan Area about the importance of breast examinations and screenings and heart health.); during the 2018-2019 sorority year, hosted an Adult Mental Health First Aid Class for Mental Health Awareness and Pink Zumba Party to raise monies for the American Cancer Society and recognized World Aids Day and the American Heart Association “National Wear Red Day”

  • Project 13 Committee – partnered with American Diabetes Association and St. Jude Children's Research (to increase membership and fundraising; during the 2018-2019 sorority year, partnered with the March of Dimes and raised funds to help with research on premature births, birth defects, and infant health and participated in the March with Us sponsored by the March for Babies.

  • Reclamation and Retention – develop projects and activities in reclaiming Sorors to Sisterhood and developing an active financial membership status
     

  • Hosts an Annual Tribute Program to honor the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the 2018-2019 sorority year earmarked 40 years of paying tribute to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; several MLK Drum Majors Service Awards were given in the categories of Entrepreneurs and Schools
